Issued to mark Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee, this piece commemorates fifty years on the throne — a reign that, for the Falkland Islands, carried particular weight after the 1982 conflict cemented British sovereign commitment to the territory. The color application, unusual for a circulating-weight cupro-nickel piece, was a production choice increasingly used by the Royal Mint's affiliated mints in the early 2000s to differentiate jubilee issues from standard commemoratives without moving to precious metals.
KM#79.1 distinguishes the colored variant from the plain strike issued concurrently under the same type number sequence.
