Saint Helena's commemorative output has long leaned on royal milestones, and the Queen's 80th birthday in April 2006 prompted issues across several British Overseas Territories simultaneously. Saint Helena, with a population under 4,000 and no functioning mint of its own, contracts production to outside facilities — most pieces in this series were struck by the Pobjoy Mint in Surrey.
The island's connection to British royal history runs deeper than most: it was the site of Napoleon's final exile and death, and has remained under Crown administration almost continuously since 1659.
