Reverse description The reverse commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Public Libraries Act of 1850, designed by Mary Milner-Dickens. A large open book with fanned pages dominates the centre of the field, rising above the neoclassical façade of a library building, rendered with columned portico and ornate frieze. The denomination 50 PENCE appears to the right of the book, while the dual dates ·1850·2000· arc across the upper field, flanked by decorative stops. The legend ·PUBLIC LIBRARIES· curves along the lower portion of the coin above the library steps. The design is executed in crisp proof relief against a deeply mirrored background.
