Guernsey Post Office issued its own postal orders independently of the British Post Office, a function it retained as part of the island's postal autonomy under the Bailiwick's separate constitutional status. This 50 Pence order dates from 1991, by which point Guernsey had been operating its own postal administration for over a decade following the separation from the GPO in 1969.
Postal orders occupy an awkward taxonomic space for collectors — neither banknote nor cheque, but catalogued by notaphilists largely because they bear watermarked paper and issuing authority obligations that parallel currency instruments. The watermark here is the primary security feature, modest by later standards but sufficient for the low-fraud-risk instrument this was designed to be.
