The "Podgy Pig" is one of several whimsical animal designs issued by the Isle of Man under the Crown Dependencies' broad latitude to produce commemorative and collector coinage independent of Royal Mint authority. The Isle of Man has exploited this freedom aggressively since the 1970s, generating an enormous volume of themed issues annually — a commercial strategy that has made Manx coinage popular with thematic collectors while leaving purists cold.
