Reverse description Dynamic artistic composition by Robert Nicholls depicting a Plesiosaurus in a naturalistic underwater scene, shown in three-quarter view with its characteristic long neck arched upward and four broad paddle-like flippers extended. Air bubbles and water currents animate the field. To the left, a detailed fossil fern frond is engraved; to the right, stylised Jurassic marine flora. In the lower portion of the field, separated by a horizontal line, a fossil skeletal forelimb of the creature is rendered with anatomical precision. The legend PLESIOSAURUS arcs along the upper border, while MARY ANNING 1823 appears along the lower border, commemorating the palaeontologist's discovery. The engraver's initials RN appear in the lower right field.
