The Isle of Man's 1980 wildlife and mythology series pushed into platinum at a moment when the metal was gaining serious attention as a coinage medium — the Soviet Palladium and Platinum issues of the late 1970s had demonstrated that collector appetite existed. The Manx government moved aggressively into platinum proofs well before most Western mints, making this one of the earlier platinum circulation-denomination proofs issued by a British Crown Dependency.
Mintage figures for the platinum variant were never published with the precision applied to the gold and silver strikes of the same type, and surviving population data remains thin across major certification services.
