Guernsey has issued commemorative 50 pence pieces through the Royal Mint and various private minting houses since the 1960s, exploiting its status as a Crown dependency to produce collector-targeted issues outside UK legal tender constraints. This 2020 Christmas piece is one of dozens of themed 50p issues the States of Guernsey have licensed over the decades — a revenue stream that has little to do with circulating coinage and everything to do with the collector market.
"O Little Town of Bethlehem" was written in 1868 by Phillips Brooks, an Episcopal rector from Philadelphia, after a horseback ride through Bethlehem the previous Christmas Eve.
