Mt. Pleasant Airport was built under urgent military necessity following the 1982 conflict, when the existing Stanley airstrip proved dangerously inadequate for fast-jet operations. Construction began in 1983 using civilian contractors under MoD oversight, with the base becoming operational in May 1985 — the same year this coin was issued. The site cost approximately £215 million and remains the most expensive single infrastructure project ever undertaken in the Falklands.
Commemorative 50p pieces tied to specific infrastructure are unusual in Falklands coinage. The timing of this issue, within months of the airport's opening, makes its purpose unambiguous.
