The Falkland Islands' penguin coinage series has been a fixture of the territory's circulation currency since the 1970s, with the Macaroni Penguin featuring as one of five breeding species found on the islands. The Macaroni — named by 18th-century British sailors after the fashion-conscious "Macaroni" dandies of the period — breeds in enormous colonies on the southwestern coastlines, with the Falklands population numbering in the hundreds of thousands despite a steep regional decline since the 1980s.
