Pobjoy Mint has operated as the official minter for several British Overseas Territories and dependent states since the 1970s, producing wildlife-themed coinage for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands that has built a secondary collector market largely detached from the territories' negligible circulating economy. South Georgia's King Penguin colony at St. Andrews Bay is among the largest on earth, numbering well over 100,000 breeding pairs — which may explain the denomination's recurring appearance across multiple years in the series.
