| 裏面の説明 | Central design featuring the iconic Chinese Pagoda of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, rendered in fine detail rising prominently within the field. The pagoda is encircled by an ornate vine motif that frames the composition, its tendrils and foliage filling the surrounding space with botanical elegance. The commemorative dates 1759 and 2009, marking the founding and the 250th anniversary of Kew Gardens respectively, are divided by the pagoda, while the inscription KEW appears below. The design was executed by Christopher Le Brun and reflects the original 2009 commemorative issue, reissued here as a piedfort striking. |

The original Kew Gardens 50p, struck in 2009 to mark the gardens' 250th anniversary, had a circulation mintage of just 210,000 — the lowest of any decimal 50p — and triggered the modern British coin-hunting phenomenon that turned supermarket change into a national pastime. This 2019 piedfort revisits that design a decade on, issued as part of the Royal Mint's ongoing programme of piedfort restrike editions targeting the collector market rather than circulation.
Piedforts, struck at double the standard coin thickness, have been a Royal Mint collector staple since the 1980s revival of the format.
