Issued to mark the death of Prince Philip in April 2021, this piece is one of several commemoratives released by the Isle of Man Government that year — an issuer with a long, occasionally exhausting history of producing collector-targeted silver proofs tied to British royal events. Philip held the title Duke of Edinburgh from 1947 until his death at 99, the longest-serving consort in British history. The Isle of Man has no obligation to mirror Westminster coinage policy, which gives it latitude to issue pieces the Royal Mint itself would not.
