The Isle of Man has long operated its own independent coinage authority — the Pobjoy Mint struck many of its commemorative issues for decades — giving the island unusual latitude to produce themed pieces well outside the scope of Royal Mint programming. This 50 pence commemorates Prince Philip's connection to the island, where he held the title Duke of Edinburgh with particular ceremonial significance to the Manx parliament, Tynwald. Philip died in April 2021 at 99, and several Isle of Man issues that year were struck posthumously, their design approvals having preceded his death by weeks.
