Issued in the months following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, this piece commemorates her role as Head of the Commonwealth — a position she held for over seven decades but one that, crucially, is not hereditary. The Commonwealth members voted separately in 2018 at the London CHOGM summit to designate Charles as her successor in that role, a decision that was by no means automatic.
Guernsey, a Crown dependency rather than a Commonwealth member, nonetheless maintained its own commemorative coin program throughout the reign.
