Guernsey is a Crown Dependency — not part of the United Kingdom and not a Commonwealth member in its own right — which makes the island's decision to issue a coin marking Elizabeth II's role as Head of the Commonwealth a quietly unusual one. The title itself was not hereditary; it was personally conferred on Elizabeth at the 1952 Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference, and the member nations voted separately in 2018 to pass it to Charles rather than let it lapse.
