Aanvullende informatie

Ascension Island, a volcanic outcrop in the South Atlantic administered by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, issued commemorative coinage largely as a revenue stream rather than for genuine circulation — the island's population was never large enough to sustain a domestic coin economy in any meaningful sense. By the late 1990s, this had become a well-worn arrangement between the island's administration and private minting interests, producing limited proof issues aimed squarely at thematic collectors.

The frigate bird — Fregata aquila — breeds on Ascension in one of its only two nesting colonies in the Atlantic basin, a fact that gave the island genuine ornithological standing long before the commemorative coin trade found it useful.
