The Endurance — Shackleton's ship — sank in the Weddell Sea in November 1915 after being crushed by pack ice, and its wreck lay undiscovered for over a century. A South African-led expedition finally located it in March 2022 at a depth of 3,008 metres, remarkably intact on the seafloor. This coin was issued the same year, timed to that discovery.
The British Antarctic Territory, though administered from London, maintains a mint program largely for collector revenue rather than circulation — no population lives there permanently to spend anything.
