Additional information

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme was founded in 1956, and the Isle of Man has long used its autonomous issuing authority to commemorate British royal milestones that the Royal Mint treats with more restraint. This piece belongs to a series marking phases of Prince Philip's life, with the 1950s segment covering the years immediately following his naturalisation as a British subject in 1947 and his increasing public role alongside the newly crowned Queen.

Philip formally renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles before that naturalisation, adopting the surname Mountbatten.
