The "Diverse Britain" 50p series was issued to mark the centenary of the Windrush generation's contribution to British society, though the broader collection grew into a wider celebration of multicultural Britain during a politically charged moment — the coins appeared while the Windrush scandal, in which thousands of Commonwealth citizens were wrongly detained or deported, was still generating parliamentary fallout.
