Reverse description Half-length figure of the Portuguese explorer João da Nova depicted to the left, shown bearded and wearing a broad-brimmed hat, shielding his eyes with his right hand as if sighting land. To the right in the field, a period caravel under full sail is depicted upon stylized waves, commemorating the discovery of Saint Helena in 1502. The explorer's name JOÃO DA NOVA arcs along the upper legend, and the discovery date 1502 appears in the lower field. A mint mark is present at the bottom centre below the date.
