| 背面描述 | The reverse depicts a half-length figure of the Portuguese explorer João da Nova, shown in period attire with his right hand raised to his brow in a surveying gesture, positioned to the left of the field. To the right, a fully rigged Portuguese caravel sails upon stylised waves, rendered in fine detail. The legend JOÃO DA NOVA arcs along the upper rim, and the discovery date 1502 appears in the lower centre field. A small engraver's monogram is visible at the bottom of the field below the date. |

Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese navigator João da Nova's sighting of Saint Helena in 1502, this crown-sized silver piece was struck for the collector market rather than circulation — the island's actual transactional coinage has long been copper-nickel. Da Nova, returning from India with the Portuguese fleet, stumbled upon the island entirely uninhabited, and the Portuguese kept its location secret for decades to use it as a private provisioning stop on the Carreira da Índia.
