The Dimorphodon was among the first pterosaurs ever scientifically described, named by Richard Owen in 1859 from Jurassic coast fossils collected by Mary Anning decades earlier — making it one of the few prehistoric creatures with a documented origin tied to a specific, named amateur collector. This coin belongs to the Royal Mint's Prehistoric Britain series, which drew on natural history consultation rather than pure artistic license, a deliberate departure from how dinosaur-themed numismatics had typically been handled by other mints.
