Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother died on 30 March 2002 at Royal Lodge, Windsor, aged 101. Ascension Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic administered partly through Saint Helena, issued this commemorative within months of her death — one of dozens of similar pieces struck across British territories that year, each technically legal tender within its issuing jurisdiction despite no realistic prospect of circulation.
KM#18a distinguishes the silver striking from the base-metal KM#18, both sharing the same design but produced for entirely different markets.
