A dragon-headed prow faces left, and to the right of the vessel stands the Point of Ayre Lighthouse rendered in fine detail. The inscription DAY OF TYNWALD JULY 5th appears in the exergue beneath the ship, with ISLE OF MAN arching above and FIFTY PENCE below along the lower rim. |

Tynwald Day, celebrated on July 5th, marks the annual open-air session of the Manx parliament on Tynwald Hill at St. John's — a continuous legislative assembly with Norse roots stretching back over a thousand years, making it arguably the oldest parliament in the world still in operation. The 1979 issue commemorates this occasion during a politically charged year for the Isle of Man, as the island was actively asserting its fiscal and administrative autonomy following the UK's 1973 entry into the EEC, from which Man was specifically excluded under Protocol 3.
The .925 silver proof was struck in limited numbers for collectors, sitting alongside a cupro-nickel circulation issue.
