Gibraltar's annual Christmas 50 pence series, running since 1988, occupies a peculiar corner of British numismatics — produced under the authority of a Crown dependency with its own currency that remains, in practice, pegged at parity with sterling. The 2001 silver proof belongs to a run of issues that were never intended to circulate, struck exclusively for the collector market during a period when the Royal Mint's relationship with Gibraltar's currency production was handled through the Pobjoy Mint.
