Gibraltar's Christmas 50 pence series has run annually since 1988, making it one of the longest-running themed coin programs from any British Overseas Territory. The multi-colour application on the cupro-nickel flan is achieved through a pad-printing process applied post-strike, which means the colour layer sits above the relief rather than being fired into it — leaving it vulnerable to wear in a way standard coin surfaces are not.
