Pobjoy Mint produced this piece for the Isle of Man, which had gained significant autonomy over its own coinage following the Island's Coinage Act of 1970 — an arrangement that allowed the Manx authorities to issue commemorative and themed coinage well outside the constraints governing mainland British issues. The Christmas 50 pence series, launched in 1975, was among the earliest annual-theme coin programs of its kind anywhere in the world.
The gold proof version was struck in extremely limited numbers for the collector market. At 26 grams in .917 gold, the intrinsic metal value substantially exceeded face value from the moment of issue.
