Gibraltar's annual Christmas 50 pence series, running since 1988, was a deliberate tourism and collector strategy by the Gibraltar government — the territory has long used its coinage program aggressively to generate revenue beyond what circulation demand would ever justify. The 2010 issue is one of dozens in the run, each with a distinct seasonal design, produced in quantities calibrated almost entirely to collector sales rather than everyday commerce.
