The Isle of Man has issued Christmas 50 pence pieces annually since 1980, making it one of the longest-running holiday coin programs from any issuing authority. By 2008, the series had accumulated enough collector momentum that the Pobjoy Mint — the island's longtime striking partner — produced silver proofs in relatively limited numbers alongside the base-metal circulation versions, catering almost entirely to the gift and collector market rather than any genuine monetary function.
