Gibraltar has issued annual Christmas 50 pence pieces since 1988, making this one of the longest-running thematic coin series from any British Overseas Territory. The program was partly a revenue exercise targeting collectors rather than circulation, though the coins are legal tender and occasionally turn up in change on the Rock.
