Additional information

Gibraltar's annual Christmas 50 pence series, launched in 1988, was among the first regular circulating coinage programs anywhere to treat a recurring holiday theme as a genuine annual collectible sequence rather than a one-off commemorative. The territory's small population and heavy tourist trade meant these pieces were hoarded almost immediately upon release, and genuine circulation examples are harder to find than mintage figures suggest.
