| Beschrijving voorzijde | Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, engraved by Jody Clark, wearing the George IV State Diadem, a drop earring, and a pearl necklace. The portrait is rendered in fine detail with naturalistic hair treatment and a composed, mature expression. The Pobjoy Mint privy mark appears below the truncation. The circumferential legend reads ELIZABETH II · 2021 · BRITISH INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORY, distributed across the upper and lower periphery of the heptagonal flan. |

The Checkerboard wrasse issue forms part of Pobjoy Mint's ongoing marine life series struck on behalf of British Indian Ocean Territory, one of the few remaining British overseas territories with no permanent civilian population — the Chagossians were controversially expelled between 1968 and 1973 to make way for the Diego Garcia military base. Coins issued under BIOT authority carry no circulating function and are produced exclusively for the collector market, the territory itself using the US dollar for the minimal transactions conducted on the base.
