Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II·D·G·REG·F·D·50 PENCE·2021· J.C
(Translation: Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith)
Reverse description The reverse presents a stylised tribute to the pioneering Victorian mathematician and computer scientist Charles Babbage, rendered in a design evoking punched card data encoding as used in early mechanical computing. The name 'charles' appears in lowercase lettering across the upper register, separated by vertical columns bearing groups of horizontal dashes representing encoded binary data. The surname 'babbage' is prominently displayed in bold lowercase characters across the centre of the field. Beneath, a sequence of numerals — 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 7, 5 — occupies the lower register, also interspersed with punched-card column motifs, the digits corresponding to the alphanumeric encoding of Babbage's name. The engraver's initials NT appear at the base of the design.
