The 2009 silver proof 50p marks the first time Britannia had appeared on the circulating 50 pence since the switch away from her image in 1994, with this issue produced partly in response to collector demand around the coin's 40th anniversary. The original cupro-nickel 50p had replaced the ten-shilling note when it entered circulation in October 1969 — an unusually large heptagonal coin that the public took some time to accept.
Spink H20 places this squarely within the commemorative proof subset rather than the bullion Britannia series, which ran on a separate track with differing silver content.
