The piedfort format — double the standard thickness — has been used by the Royal Mint for collector issues since the early 1980s, reviving a practice that dates to medieval France where piéforts were struck as presentation pieces for assay purposes. This gold version of the 2019 Britannia 50p sits in a long annual series, but the piedfort distinction means the blank itself contains roughly twice the gold of the standard proof, making it as much a bullion object as a numismatic one.
The 2019 issue uses the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, introduced in 2015.
