Beschrijving keerzijde The colored reverse depicts the yellow autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) 'Boaty McBoatface', bearing its name on the hull, shown in the foreground on stylized Antarctic waters. Behind it rises the hull of the Royal Research Ship 'Sir David Attenborough', with its name inscribed on the vessel's side and the designation 'NB 2' also visible. Antarctic icebergs and seabirds in flight occupy the background. The legend 'BOATY MCBOATFACE' arcs along the upper field, while 'FIFTY PENCE' is inscribed along the lower periphery, all rendered in applied color over a proof-quality silver field.

Aanvullende informatie

The name "Boaty McBoatface" originated in a 2016 public poll run by the Natural Environment Research Council to name a new £200 million polar research vessel. The internet voted overwhelmingly for the joke entry, submitted by a former BBC radio presenter. Embarrassed officials named the ship RSS Sir David Attenborough instead, demoting "Boaty McBoatface" to one of its yellow submersibles — a decision that somehow satisfied no one and delighted everyone.

The British Antarctic Territory, a UK Overseas Territory with no permanent civilian population, issues collector coins largely as a revenue mechanism. This silver piece commemorates the submersible, not the ship.
