The name "Boaty McBoatface" originated in a 2016 public naming poll run by the Natural Environment Research Council for a new £200 million Royal Research Ship. The internet voted overwhelmingly for the joke submission — over 124,000 votes — and the resulting embarrassment prompted NERC to name the ship RRS Sir David Attenborough instead, consoling the public by assigning the name to one of the vessel's bright yellow remotely operated submarines. The British Antarctic Territory, a UK overseas territory with no permanent civilian population, issues coins largely for collector revenue rather than circulation.
