Additional information

Saint Helena issued this piece as part of a broader wildlife conservation series in the late 1990s, a period when the island's government was actively producing collector-oriented coinage to generate revenue — the territory having almost no other export economy to speak of. The Blue Whale subject aligned with growing international attention to cetacean protection following the IWC's commercial whaling moratorium of 1986.

Mintage figures for this type are not widely documented, which is itself telling for a small-territory issue of this kind.
