背面描述 Central design by John Bergdahl depicts King Harold II in battle dress, struck through by an arrow to the eye and bearing three arrows in his shield, in a dramatic commemorative rendering of the pivotal moment at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The date of the battle is divided on either side of the central figure. The commemorative legend arcs around the upper field, with the designer's initials JB and the original design year appearing within the composition.

附加信息

The Battle of Hastings piedfort was issued to mark the 953rd anniversary of the October 1066 engagement — an odd choice of interval, since neither a round anniversary nor an obvious commemorative hook explains the timing beyond the Royal Mint's broader medieval history series running through the late 2010s. Piedforts in gold at this weight sit firmly in the bullion-adjacent collector market rather than anywhere near circulatable currency.

The 1066 campaign itself turned on Harold's decision to force a rapid march south after Stamford Bridge, denying his infantry adequate rest before facing Norman cavalry. That tactical error, more than Norman superiority, likely decided the day.
