Alderney was the only British territory actually occupied by German forces during World War II — from July 1940 until liberation in May 1945. The island's civilian population had been evacuated just before the occupation, and Nazi authorities subsequently used it as the site of four labor camps, including Lager Sylt, the only SS concentration camp on British soil. That history gives Alderney's Battle of Britain commemoratives a geographical weight that issues from any other Crown dependency simply cannot carry.
