| Description de l’avers | The fifth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, as modelled by Jody Clark, occupies the centre of the heptagonal flan, depicting the monarch in right-facing portrait wearing the George IV State Diadem, a drop earring visible at her ear. The Battle of Britain 50p piedfort was issued for the 2019 commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the campaign fought between July and October 1940. Piedfort production at the Royal Mint doubles the standard planchet thickness, a practice revived in the modern era largely to satisfy collector demand for premium finishes rather than serving any monetary function.
The Spink reference H68A distinguishes the piedfort from its standard silver counterpart — a small but commercially meaningful difference the Royal Mint has exploited consistently across its commemorative programs since the 1980s.
