Reverse description The reverse, designed by Gary Breeze, commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain of 1940. The upper portion of the field depicts a formation of numerous Second World War aircraft — including recognisable silhouettes of German bombers and fighter aircraft — arrayed across the sky in a dynamic aerial scene. Below, rendered in a photographic-style relief, three RAF aircrew in flying gear are shown running across an airfield in scramble formation toward a Spitfire aircraft visible at the lower right. The bold legend THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN is inscribed across the centre of the field, with the commemorative date 1940 appearing in the exergue below the figural scene. The engraver's initials GB are visible in small relief to the lower right of the figural group.
