Beschrijving keerzijde Two Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus), Gibraltar's iconic resident primates, depicted in naturalistic relief occupying the central field. A larger adult ape is seated facing left in the background, while a juvenile sits upright in the foreground to its left, both rendered with fine textural detail to the fur. The species name BARBARY APE appears in two lines to the right of the composition, and the numeral 50, denoting the denomination, is inscribed along the lower field.

Aanvullende informatie

Gibraltar's Barbary macaques — invariably called "apes" despite being tailless monkeys — have been garrisoned on the Rock since at least the early 18th century, and British military superstition holds that the garrison will fall if the colony dies out. Churchill reportedly ordered their numbers reinforced by import from Morocco during World War II when the population dropped dangerously low. The Gibraltar Government has issued numerous 50 pence wildlife types since the 1990s, the macaque being among the most frequently revisited subjects in the series.
