Issued as part of the Royal Mint's London 2012 Olympic programme, which ultimately ran to 29 different 50p sport designs — the largest number of legal tender coins ever produced for a single event by any mint. The silver collector version was struck alongside a cupro-nickel circulation issue, the latter becoming notorious for the public scramble it generated among change-checkers.
The athletics design was one of several in the series by different artists selected through open competition.
