Jersey issued this piece as part of its well-established pattern of commemorating British royal milestones, a tradition the bailiwick has pursued aggressively since the 1970s. The 90th birthday series drew on archival photography rather than painted portraiture — an unusual choice for circulating-format commemoratives that gave the reverse a documentary quality more common to medals than coins.
