Jersey has issued commemorative 50 pence pieces with some regularity, but gold-plated steel strikes occupy an uncomfortable middle ground — neither bullion nor true collector coinage. Elizabeth II turned 90 on 21 April 2016, and the occasion prompted a wave of issues across Crown Dependencies and Commonwealth territories, most of them undistinguished. Jersey's output was no exception.
The plating process on these pieces is notoriously inconsistent from the production runs used for mass-market commemoratives, with wear appearing at high points within months of handling.
