背面描述 A dramatic high-relief scene commemorating the Allied assault on Sword Beach during the D-Day landings of 6 June 1944. Allied infantry troops are depicted wading ashore from landing craft through breaking surf, advancing under fire toward a coastal town with church spires and fortified structures visible in the background. Two aircraft fly in formation in the upper left field, evoking the Allied air cover on the day. The commemorative inscription 'D-DAY 75' appears at the upper centre, surmounted by a crossed-swords emblem. The beach designation 'SWORD' is boldly inscribed along the lower field in large relief lettering, with the engraver's initials 'JI' to its left.

附加信息

Alderney's position in the D-Day story is particular: the island was the only British territory with a purpose-built German concentration camp, Lager Sylt, and its entire civilian population had been evacuated by the British government in 1940 before the occupation began. None were present when Allied forces finally approached in 1945. The island surrendered on 16 May, a full week after VE Day, one of the last German-held positions in the British Isles to do so.

This piece is one of several in a sword-beach themed series issued by Alderney in 2019 for the 75th anniversary. The silver-plated copper-nickel composition is standard for commemorative crown-sized issues of this type from the territory.
