Ascension Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, held strategic value during the Falklands War as the primary staging point for Operation Corporate in 1982. Its commemorative coinage program through the 1990s was administered under the auspices of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority, with issues like this one struck specifically for the collector market rather than any genuine circulation need on the island's small resident population of military and contractor personnel.
