The Battle of Britain anniversary coinage issued from the Channel Islands carries an irony worth noting: Guernsey itself was occupied by German forces from June 1940 until May 1945, making it one of the only British territories that could not openly commemorate the RAF's victory during the war's lifetime. The island had no air defense of its own — it was simply abandoned to occupation as militarily indefensible.
